BUY BOOKS

You're interested in buying the book? Brilliant. Slovenology is part travelogue, part memoir, part essay collection of life and travels in what I honestly believe is the world's best country. It's been a big best-seller in Slovenia, in both English and Slovenian editions, and will shortly come out in German. It's a great handbook to take with you to Slovenia, as a souvenir on your return, or simply if you're curious about a wonderful small country that punches far above its class.

The book contains:

  • my "feats of manliness" I was obliged to perform before my wedding

  • how having a (hairless) dog helped prepare me for fatherhood

  • how I chose Slovenia after auditioning 8 different countries

  • 20 things the US could learn from Slovenia

  • an in-depth guide to menus, cultural traditions, schnapps tastings

  • profiles of fascinating locals, from a potter who collects rare birds to an Academy Award-winning Bosnian actor to a Bruce Springsteen of Slovenia and beyond

  • on the zen of mushrooming (and bonding with one's mother in law)

  • recommended itineraries for visits of 1, 3, 5 or 7 days

  • walking tours of Ljubljana and Kamnik

  • my adventures learning the language

  • and much more!

That said, it's a bit fiddly to buy, unless you read Slovene or are in Slovenia. The eBook is available from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, so that's easy. But print copies are only sold in Slovenia at the moment, though they can be shipped anywhere in the world (you just have to navigate a Slovene-language website. The easiest way forward, if you'd like a print copy, is to email me at slovenology@gmail.com, and I'll try to hook you up. You can also request a signed copy with an optional dedication!

Slovenology the Book

Eternal Architect:

The Life and Art of Joze Plecnik, Modernist Mystic

I had two books come out in Slovenia in 2017, and this second one is based on my doctoral thesis on the wonderful Slovenian architect, Joze Plecnik, whose work is admired by all who come to Ljubljana (or Vienna, or Prague, where he famously renovated Prague Castle). This book was published in English and Slovene editions by Totaliteta and the City Museums of Ljubljana, and is gorgeously illustrated and with a striking design. It came in second in the 2017 Slovenian Book of the Year competition and is a beautiful addition to a coffee table or bookshelf, especially for architects and design aficionados. As with Slovenology, please email me if you'd like a print copy: slovenology@gmail.com.
